WhatsApp Number Banned? What to Do and How to Avoid It

Why WhatsApp bans numbers, how to request a review, and how businesses can send bulk messages safely without getting banned.

Why WhatsApp bans numbers

WhatsApp bans numbers that break its Terms of Service to protect users from spam and abuse. The most common reasons are:

  • Sending bulk or unwanted messages to people who didn’t save your number or didn’t ask to hear from you.
  • Many users blocking or reporting your number.
  • Using unofficial apps such as modified WhatsApp versions or unofficial bulk-sender tools.
  • Adding many people to groups without their permission.
  • Sharing harmful, illegal or misleading content.

Temporary ban vs permanent ban

  • Temporary ban: WhatsApp shows a timer. You can use your account again when it ends. Often caused by unofficial apps or unusual activity.
  • Permanent ban: WhatsApp says your number is banned from using WhatsApp. You can request a review.

Step-by-step: what to do if your number is banned

  1. Don’t panic and don’t create new accounts to get around it.
  2. Uninstall any unofficial or modified WhatsApp app and install the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app from the Play Store or App Store.
  3. Open WhatsApp and verify your number. If you see a ban message, tap Request a review (or Support) and follow the steps.
  4. Explain honestly how you use the number and that you will follow WhatsApp’s rules.
  5. Wait for WhatsApp’s reply. Reviews can take from a few hours to a few days. You may also contact WhatsApp Support through the app or the contact form on WhatsApp’s website.
⚠️ Nobody – no website, agency or app – can guarantee to “unban” a WhatsApp number. Only WhatsApp decides. Avoid paid “unban services”.

How businesses can avoid bans

  • Never use unofficial bulk-sender apps or modified WhatsApp versions.
  • Message only customers who opted in.
  • Add an easy opt-out (“Reply STOP”).
  • Don’t send too many promotions – one or two a week is plenty.
  • Move bulk messaging to the official WhatsApp Business API, which is built and approved for sending updates to many customers.

WhatsApp Business API: restrictions instead of sudden bans

On the official WhatsApp Business API, numbers have a quality rating. If customers block or report your messages, the rating drops and Meta may limit how many people you can message or pause templates. Problems are shown in WhatsApp Manager, so you can fix them. Serious or repeated policy violations can still lead to account restrictions.

Read how to protect your quality rating and how to collect opt-ins the right way.

Sending to many customers? Do it the official way

If your number was banned for bulk messaging, the WhatsApp Business API is the safe way to send campaigns, reminders and updates to opted-in customers – with approved templates, reports and a team inbox.
